Rudrakshas comes from Sanskrit which means; Rudra’ and ‘Aksha’. ‘Rudra’ is another name for Lord Shiva, while ‘Aksha’ means teardrop. Therefore it is also known as the Tear Drops of Shiva. It comes from a tree called (Elaeocarpus granitrus) Rudrakshas are held in high esteem especially among Saivaites (worshippers of Lord Shiva) but In general it is held as a sacred and powerful item in Hinduism and to many people of different religion.

Rudrakshas can be commonly seen being worn by rishis, priests, and also sages. In modern society, many people from all walks of life wear Rudrakshas because it has been proven that it helps cure many different kinds of ailments and can also benefit the wearer in making his wishes come true.

There are altogether more than 20 Mukhis or what we call face of a Rudrakshas. The lines on each Rudrakshas are either called Mukhis or face. Based on ones astrological signs a different Mukhi are recommended however there is no wrong combination in wearing a Rudrakshas. Anyone can wear a Rudraksha as long as they feel comfortable with a particular Mukhi that they have chosen.

Fake Rudrakshas

Everyone seems to be saying that they sell original Rudraksha these days. There is no real test which can confirm a real from a fake. However before buying a Rudraksha, ask the dealer to show you a real from a fake and make him explain to you before you consider buying one. This is best done if you can get him to show you the items personally.

Due to the large demand of Rudrakshas, unscrupulous dealers either make them out of resins or have for example a 5 Mukhi tampered to a 9 Mukhi with cut lines done so well that sometimes it is almost impossible to tell from an original. Fake Rudrakshas are also made from 3 different Rudrakshas cut and joined together to make for example a 13 Mukhi.

Good quality Nepalese Rudrakshas are never cheap, prices depends much on the size, quality and origin of the seed itself. Rudrakshas come from many different countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and India. The type from Nepal is usually of high quality, the difference can be seen right away when you place a Nepalese and a non Nepalese seed side by side.

If you have to wear a Rudraksha it is better to wear a real 5 Mukhi to a fake 14 Mukhi as fakes do not posses the properties of a real Rudraksha. 5 Mukhis are not expensive even for a very good quality specimen. It beats wearing fakes anytime. Rudrakshas are the symbolic of Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva is among Gods the easiest to please. He does not require one to go thru difficult task just to please him, simple offerings and having faith in him will do.
